A.PRE-READING

1. Introducing theme:
Give the students some clues so they guess what the text is about. Ask them some questions such as: ”How do you come to school?” “How your mum and dad go to his/her job/shopping?” Write on blackboard the most important words. Include words for activity B.
We warn the students that they are going to read a poem.
2. Look at the pictures and describe what you can see. Use as many words from the blackboard as possible.

B. DURING READING TASK.
Choose 7 categories:
  1. Words dealing with pollution
  2. Words dealing with cars : gas petrol, Japanese cars...
  3. Numbers…
Choose one narrator plus one reader for category. The narrator reads and stops when one of those words comes up. The person responsible for that category has to fill the gap (better in groups)

C. POST READING TASK.
1. Semantic units.
2. Identify structure of the poem, rhyming words and rules you can easily identify (capital letters, groups of four lines, number of stanzas)
During this activity explain and identify topics such as:
Pollution
Materialism.
Family unit
The American way of life.


3. Do you identify yourself with the text?
One group plays the role of the family, the other group plays the role of the neighbours. Switch back groups after a while. (Play devil’s advocate)
Choose a moderator. Select a spokesperson; NO TALKING to him: pass him notes o switch to be a spokesperson.
4. Find and use some images which represent the poems ideas. The collage must express what the poem says(It can be placed as homework).
